Clasificarea genurilor fantasy

The recent evolution and growing importance of fantasy determined theorists to elaborate some classification.

1.                  High fantasy: the very representative is J.R.R. Tolkien with his “Lord of the Rings”. The characteristics of this category are a big action, numerous characters, physical fight and interior conflicts mainly light-dark war, friendship-betray, love-hate.
2.                  Mythological fantasy is contrasting with high fantasy because this one has characters like goods, angels, demons and other creatures from the world beyond. This mythological fantasy creates its myths, and the process is the most important part. E.g. Abhorsen trilogy, by Garth Nix.
3.                  Sword and sorcery is another type and appears more frequently in comics and pc/x-box games than literature. Generally sword and sorcery present conflicts between brave heroes and sorcerers, warlocks, spirits, pixies and many other dark creatures. In this kind of fantasy, we have emphasized violence, stronger and braver heroes, all this being an image created by Americans. E.g. The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan
4.                  Comic fantasy or low fantasy contains humor, satire and parodied fantastic or fantasy novels. The accent is put on character actions and dialog. E.g. Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.
5.                  Romantic fantasy contains romantic themes and motives, powerful and influent characters. The main ideas of the sub-gender are tolerance, diversity, world protection and love. E.g. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
6.                  Love fantasy is the sub-gender in which only feelings and expressing them is creating the novel’s plot. That is because love has same importance as good-evil or light-dark war. E.g. Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer
7.                  Science-Fantasy. In comparison with SF, which explains supernatural, science-fantasy accepts it like magic and turns it in a mythical dimension. Any well-advanced technology from SF can be considered similar to magic in fantasy. The mix between magic and technology gives more adrenaline to the reader. E.g. The Sword of Shannara trilogy by Terry Brooks, The Host by Stephanie Meyer
8.                  Dark fantasy is similar to high fantasy as in places and themes but it has some horror atmosphere. The characters are vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, dead peoples and many others. E.g. The Vampire Chronicles saga by Anne Rice. (Clute and Grant, 338)
The purpose of this classification is to demonstrate the numerous aspects which can became part of fantasy and the colossal variety of themes, motifs and topics.
